Salvia guaranitica plants love rich, well-drained soil. Avoid poorly-drained soils as they can cause root rot. Go for sandy, chalky, and loamy soils with a slightly acidic pH of 5.5 - 6.5. Here in North Texas, black and blue sage does just fine planted in our heavy clay soil that's amended with well-rotted compost.
